The general theme builds on the Scientific Challenges & Business Opportunities in Sustainable Environmental Management (SciBO-SEM) edition at BIS 2025, which focused on sustainable environmental management and the evolution of integrative, information-intensive approaches in business information systems.

While SciBO-SEM highlighted the transition from traditional sectorial approaches (e.g., water management, energy efficiency, economic activities, air quality monitoring, and construction planning) toward more comprehensive system views, it also exposed the broader need for sustainable business practices that meaningfully integrate environmental, social, and economic considerations within organizational decision-making.

In parallel, organizations today are challenged by rapidly increasing volumes of heterogeneous data, often distributed across multiple formats and accessibility levels, and by the need to balance real-time responsiveness with long-term strategic understanding. Not all information is equally critical or of equal quality, making data screening, conditioning, historical benchmarking, and stakeholder access central to both operational excellence and responsible governance.

This follow-up workshop broadens the original scope by placing sustainable business practices and capacity building at the core of business information systems research and application. It emphasizes the role of education, training, and knowledge development in enabling professionals across sectors to navigate complex environments, adopt sustainable strategies, and leverage emerging technologies such as AI, digital transformation, and data analytics in ways that produce real business value.

Aligned with the BIS 2026 conference theme “From Hype to Impact: Turning AI into Real Business Value”, this workshop invites contributions that explore novel frameworks, systems, and practices through which knowledge-driven approaches can enhance sustainability outcomes across businesses and institutions, supporting decision-makers in turning insights into impactful, responsible action.

Topics of interest

The SciBO-SEED workshop addresses the BIS conference theme, expanding the focus from sustainable environmental management toward sustainable and responsible business practices supported by advanced information systems and strengthened through education, training, and knowledge development.
