Orchestrating Human and Artificial Intelligence in Business
Artificial Intelligence has swiftly entered enterprises, often faster than regulatory and organizational frameworks can adapt. Employees increasingly recognize the benefits of AI and integrate it into their daily work, sometimes without formal approval or governance mechanisms. This phenomenon, often referred to as shadow AI, creates both opportunities and risks. As the initial fascination with AI matures, organizations are beginning to ask a more fundamental question: what comes next?
Public debate around AI remains polarized. Some voices warn about disruption, job displacement, and broader societal consequences, while others emphasize unprecedented opportunities for productivity and innovation. At the same time, many organizations are reevaluating earlier workforce reduction strategies and recognizing that the future is not a binary choice between people and AI. Instead, the challenge lies in establishing effective approaches for alignment, collaboration, and orchestration. Organizations need robust frameworks for the safe and responsible adoption of AI technologies. The theme “Orchestrating Human and Artificial Intelligence in Business” reflects these profound changes in organizations, work practices, and labor markets.
Beyond the societal perspective, there is a pressing need for methods, tools, and technologies that support this transition. AI agents require coordination and governance. It is not enough to provide them with access to tools and knowledge; they must also be able to collaborate effectively with people. Determining which tasks should be performed by humans, which by AI agents, and which through hybrid collaboration has become a central research question. Business Process Management has long focused on coordinating activities across people and organizations. Today, a new participant enters this landscape: autonomous AI agents.
